Historic Neighbourhood Walks - Bangkok 2020

Let's join to do walks in the Historic Neighbourhoods of Bangkok! Your part is to join a small sub-team, to plan a 3-4 hour walking tour for the others. Each tour includes a rest stop and place for quick lunch (optional) afterwards. This activity is planned to meet once a week for 6 consecutives Tuesdays and you are required to attend all of them. Since we have almost covered all Barrett's "22 Walks in Bangkok" book... we are proposing new and exciting routes thanks to the extended public transport lines!

Yes! we know you can do it on you own... but how much more fun is it to share and explore together?!! In the orientation day we will create teams and decide areas to be visited which can be chosen from the ones we will be proposing or any one you might have in mind.

Narrating ruins in an urban landscape: Mrauk U and the history of the Rakhine kingdom by Jaques P. LEIDER

Mrauk U was the Buddhist capital of the Arakanese Kingdom from the 15th to 17th Century and an important trading port on the Bay of Bengal. Like other Southeast Asian cities of the past, it offers to the visitor a site of dispersed ruins of mainly religious stone architecture and an eroded palace site amidst a bustling mid-size Rakhine town. Some temples are still in use, others are dysfunctional or partly reconstructed, heaps of stones point to former stupas, moats have dried up and stone

inscriptions kept in the museum bear few explanations. Chronicles, foreign accounts and local voices tell stories that are not reflected in the material heritage. The presentation will deal with the challenge for the historian, the local teacher or the casual guide to Mrauk U how to narrate the history of a capital and a kingdom from the sparse material legacy, the available textual evidence and an understanding what the site and its monuments can mean today for a variety of audiences.
